Invention, is it a fair and viable replacement to bp lottery?
Right now?, no, components to make invention are out of reach of a solo R&D player who focuses on science skills to do the inventions. Not very good fighting skills to go into low/null sec to explore for the items.
Who has better chances to do inventions? players with: -access to 0.0 where the components are found -large cash to buy the components -access to labs that are not overcrowded, this does not reflect on the invention process itself, but it has to do with the time spent waiting to get the invention done and the increased cost of making it.
So who has a better chance? In one word: Alliances.
Possible problems: -Owner of T2 BPO buys Data interface (DI) critical for invention, makes the invention and sells those bpc at his convenience, while he keeps building T2 with his original BPO.
Proposal:
With the invention you get a BPO not a BPC. It will be a crappy BPO (can only make limited copies, use to much components to build, take too much time to build, etc), but investing (as heavily as you deem fit) on decryptor, datacores, agent rp's and such, you can improve it to almost original status.
Why 100% invention? because you would record your research and you would start from that point to continue the invention. If you invent something you would not have to invent it again. But the more you use the data interface (DI), the worse the BPO you get, because you are doing the same invention again with a used DI. Or maybe we could do this the other way around, new DI do worse BPO, while older, used and tested DI give better BPO. Your pick.
Other posible method of getting a BPO would be to gather many other BP, datacores, R.A.M. or a rig-like-component from the different systems that make up a T2 BPO. A small armor repairer II BPO would need a few items to be built and a ship is a more complex machine that would require a lot of items for its BPO to be made, but that does not mean they are easy to find or obtain from R&D agents (yes, i think R&D agents should give missions not related to the research they are doing for you, even if you don't have a research going with them, as long as you have the skills to use those agents)
Want to solve the original T2 PBO issue? Well, there could be a virus that corrupts all older T2 BPO, and makes them BPC, but they can try to get a BPO again by doing invention on their now BPC. Still, doing invention on their corrupted T2 BPO would give a better BPO than invention with normal T1 BPO. They keep an advantage.
Now we can have a new way to get a T2 BPO, invention (or is it reverse engineering?) from a corrupted T2 BPO.
And how to make T2 BPO obtainable by every R&D oriented player? -In high sec, we have T1 BPO and BPC available, just make the Data Interface, datacores and decryptors available from R&D agents. (no, you don't get them after 2 or 3 missions) -In low/null sec you can get them from exploration and Cosmos _If you go for the gathering of T2 BPO parts to build a complete T2 BPO (like rig parts), make them available from exploration in all EVE and from all R&D agents (they have contacts and can get their hands on some) -It could be that reprocesing a module and with the right science skills, you could get those BPO components, like salvaging.
And what faction released this virus? Accusations fly.
